In his published works, Elias pays only little attention to gender relations. There is only one article that deals directly and exclusively with gender relations—or more precisely: with the “changes in the balance of power between the sexes” in the Roman Empire. In some cases, however, Elias also makes repeated thematic references in his other works, albeit never in a central position. But throughout his life, especially in old age, Elias has dealt intensively with gender relations—without, however, having generated extensive publications from it. In this respect, this topic has remained in the penumbra. The following article aims to clear the penumbra and present and evaluate Elias’ approaches to describing and explaining the changes in the balance of power between the sexes in his unpublished works.
