Meaningful lives are often thought to be lives that are in some way “important”, but it is unclear what importance actually consists in. In this chapter Hauskeller puts the idea to the test by looking at the role that among other things football plays in the lives of many fans and the different ways in which things can become important in people’s lives. It turns out that while people often seek and gain importance through extraordinary achievements, what makes their life meaningful is not their achievements as such, but the importance those achievements have for them through the role they play in their life. The chapter concludes with a critical examination of the common assumption that our lives can become more meaningful through events taking place after our death, such as the posthumous recognition we receive for our achievements.
