Some of the most influential objectivist theories of meaning in life are consequentialist in orientation. Meaning consequentialists claim that a life is meaningful to the extent that some good results from it. Lives that don’t make a positive difference to the world are meaningless. Living a meaningful life, then, means living a useful life. However, by identifying a life’s meaningfulness with its usefulness, any connection between life’s meaningfulness and the way it is lived and how it is for the one who lives it is severed. In consequence, anything, including non-human animals and even inanimate things, can now be said to have a meaningful life or rather existence, provided they can be made use of. Hauskeller argues that such an extreme externalisation of meaning is misguided, not the least because it fails to do justice to the existential concerns that makes us care about meaning in the first place.
