While meaning subjectivists and meaning objectivists both agree that human life can be meaningful if certain conditions are met, meaning nihilists claim that nobody’s life is meaningful. This is because for a life to be meaningful it would have to be ‘ultimately significant’ by either having an overall purpose or a lasting effect, which nobody’s life ever does. Theists share with nihilists the assumption that meaning requires ultimate significance (or in other words that for there to be meaning in life, there needs to be a meaning of life), but claim that if God exists, our lives actually are, or can be, ultimately significant because our lives would then have a purpose. Hauskeller discusses these views and concludes that life does not need a purpose to be meaningful.
