This introductory chapter provides an exploration and overview of the human endocannabinoid system (ECS). Beginning with the history and timeline of the discovery of the ECS, the sections of this chapter examine the components, anatomy, and physiologic effects of the ECS in each organ system. A deeper exploration of the expanded ECS, or endocannabinoidome, is also included.
