In the past several decades, we have seen a transition in scientific research from a reductionist to a more holistic approach to understanding and treating disease. From the anecdotal stories told by our professors of waiting to hear the next amino acid in a protein sequence to the human genome project, followed by dynamic cell networks with systems biology enabling proteomic, metabolomic, lipidomic, and genomic approaches, collectively referred to as ‘Omic-level data. Within a generation, we went from striving to understand one gene while dreaming about a true systems approach to being buried in a network of terabytes. In a brief tour of historical scientific milestones, this chapter will examine the context for this pending paradigm shift and the potential impact on the biopharmaceutical industry.
