Agroecosystems (AE) are complex socioecological systems that can provide several cultural ecosystem services (CES), such as traditional knowledge, recreation, or a sense of place, that are often overlooked. However, CES are crucial for people's physical and mental well-being and need to be recognised. While there has been an increase in publications on this topic, a framework that considers a holistic set of indicators covering all CES classes applicable to AE is still missing. This work aimed to develop a framework for the study area of the CULTIVAR research project ( https://icultivar.pt ) in east central Portugal, which has a diverse agricultural landscape with outstanding cultural and natural values that deliver a multitude of CES. Through literature review, data search and expert opinion, we identified 20 potential proxy indicators for agroecosystems CES, considering the Common International Classification of Ecosystem Services classification system (CICES). Each indicator was scored based on the time required to collect data, data analysis complexity, relevance for the project goals, and capacity to map the indicator. After this step, we prioritised and selected 6 CES to be assessed for the Cultivar study area.
