The concept of DEI, or diversity, equity and inclusion, has permeated the discussion in the United States about what should be the content of education at both the K-12 and higher education levels. DEI is one of many different educational approaches designed to improve human interactions and achieve greater social justice. This article reviews what DEI is, along with educational approaches such as global education, peace education, socio-emotional learning, and service learning and places them all under the human rights education umbrella. Despite their positive intent, such approaches are seldom framed as human rights education. DEI in the US has been both supported and attacked for promoting liberal ideology that challenges racism, sexism, and exclusion of both individuals and the discussion of their current and historical experiences. This article argues that DEI is a sub-variant of human rights education and that the attack on DEI is actually an attack on the notion of human rights. Therefore, the attack on DEI is more than a pedagogical debate but is one that intentionally or inadvertently undermines the education of human rights and their implementation.
