When investing heavily in critique, we cannot ignore what might be termed a crisis of critique—it is as if critique had somehow “lost its reason,” become detached from the exercise of reason, and risked becoming irrational and unreasonable. On the one hand, critical thinking, which is undeniably linked to digital culture and the prevailing liberalism and individualism, is overdeveloped, vehemently exercised against any claim to authority in an argument, and ultimately, against any and all authority figures. On the other hand, in this overdeveloped fervor, critique fails to examine itself. We forget to critique the critique; we fail to have concern for rigor, for support, and even for any relationship to reality. The current state of critique is certainly testing, both in the sense that it weakens our ability to objectify the problems at hand, and it reveals new requirements.
