On multiple occasions in the foregoing chapters, we have emphasized the importance of life and vitality. For humans, life is not simply a matter of being biologically alive, as it is for many other organisms: biological life is not enough. Human subjectivity is such that one can be alive but not feel alive; one can be isolated from other living beings; and ultimately, one can cause harm to all living beings, as we have done by bringing about the Anthropocene. Having almost come to the end of this book, from a certain point of view, we can come full circle: we need to invest fully in our own existence, while also contributing to that of others. We may even find we feel more alive as we become involved in other lives than our own. At this level, we see the emergence of a connection between engagement that can be described as political in the Anthropocene, and the search for meaning in our own existence. Moreover, we are no longer in prehistoric times, when humans mingled with other animals with a sense of eagerness, fascination, and sometimes terror, feeling vulnerable to predators more powerful than they.
