Getting Started

In this chapter, I discuss the essential equipment and materials for studying plankton, starting with microscopes, which are necessary for observing these tiny organisms. Compound microscopes are recommended for viewing small plankton such as diatoms and protozoans, while stereomicroscopes or affordable alternatives like digital magnifiers are useful for larger species. The chapter also explains how to make a homemade plankton net using simple materials and emphasizes the importance of proper sample collection and preservation, including the use of Lugol’s Solution or Betadine as preservatives. Additionally, it highlights the need for identification guides, field guides, and online databases to help recognize different plankton species. Safety precautions are stressed when handling chemicals, using microscopes, and collecting samples from natural water bodies, along with proper disposal of biological waste and chemicals. By following these guidelines, anyone can safely and effectively study plankton at home.
