A Brief Introduction to Plankton
摘要
Plankton are a diverse group of organisms that drift in marine and freshwater environments, unable to swim against currents, and they play a fundamental role in aquatic ecosystems as the foundation of the food web. There are several types of plankton, each with specific roles. Bacterioplankton break down organic matter and recycle essential nutrients, while virioplankton regulate populations by infecting other plankton, contributing to nutrient cycling. Phytoplankton, similar to terrestrial plants, use photosynthesis to produce oxygen and serve as primary producers in the food web. Some phytoplankton, known as mixotrophs, also consume other organisms. Zooplankton, on the other hand, are heterotrophic, feeding on bacterioplankton, phytoplankton, or other zooplankton, and are crucial for transferring energy up the food chain to larger marine animals like fish. Plankton vary greatly in size, from microscopic femtoplankton to larger species like jellyfish. Plankton not only support the marine food web, but they also play a vital role in nutrient recycling and help regulate the Earth’s climate by influencing carbon dioxide levels in the atmosphere. Through these processes, plankton are essential to both marine ecosystems and the global environment.
