Hemorrhagic Shock in Trauma (Stab Wound)

Trauma from stab wounds can have severe sequelae and complications that may not be apparent during initial evaluation and triage. These injuries could be unmasked and exacerbated after induction of anesthesia and at any time during intraoperative exploration. Management of patients in these emergencies requires clear interdisciplinary communication between surgical and anesthesia teams. The goals of this chapter are to review operating room management of traumatic hemorrhagic shock, discuss how to optimize anesthetic induction for patients in hemorrhagic shock, and review implementing massive transfusion protocols. In addition, this comprehensive chapter contains the materials needed to develop and implement a successful simulation, including a case scenario, narrative, and progression as well as a scoring rubric for evaluation of perioperative management for patients with stab trauma.
