Eclampsia

Pregnancy and the process of placentation cause changes across multiple systems in the mother. Certain patient populations can develop preeclampsia, which commonly manifests as hypertension in the third trimester with signs of end-organ damage. Severe presentation of preeclampsia can manifest as acute renal failure, pulmonary edema, and seizures, known as eclampsia. This chapter will review the signs and symptoms of preeclampsia and eclampsia and the systemic effects of preeclampsia and complications and discuss intraoperative management of evolving eclampsia. In addition, this comprehensive chapter contains the materials needed to develop and implement a successful simulation including case scenario, narrative, and progression as well as a scoring rubric for evaluating the management of the spectrum of hypertensive disorders of pregnancy in the perioperative setting.
