摘要

Patients suffering from burn injury trauma can be challenging to manage from both a surgical and an anesthesia perspective. Interdisciplinary communication and coordination are key for the successful management of the patient. Specifically, the airway in burn patients can be particularly challenging to secure in the setting of an emergency. Potential issues that increase the challenge of securing the airway include airway edema, cervical spine instability, and facial fractures. This chapter will outline how to design and evaluate performance for a simulation scenario that will teach how to recognize and manage extensive thermal burns with airway involvement, including surgical airway, review initial fluid management, and identify toxic exposures. In addition, this comprehensive chapter contains the materials needed to develop and implement a successful simulation including a case scenario, narrative, and progression as well as a scoring rubric for evaluation of perioperative management of patients with burn injuries.
