Amid escalating global challenges, including the repercussions of COVID-19 and the conflict in Ukraine, and with the 2030 Agenda remaining elusive, the EU-LAC partnership has pioneered a (geopolitical) shift towards cooperative efforts with middle-income countries. This entails fostering collaboration on shared agendas, facilitated by innovative tools like the Global Gateway Investment Agenda and Team Europe. These mechanisms signal a departure from traditional aid models, focusing instead on generating economic opportunities in both regions, aligned with green and digital transition paradigms. While these tools empower private sectors and financial institutions to drive investments, this new partnership remains a work in progress. Advancing this model necessitates mechanisms ensuring development impact, inclusive policy co-creation spaces that would ensure increased ownership, integrated-transitional approaches, and strengthened joint multilateral action, and the exploration of a dedicated “LAC team”.
