Nanocarriers for Transportation Across the Blood-Brain Barrier

Drug carriers at the nanoscale have shown many advantages in treating brain diseases, such as Parkinson’s disease, Alzheimer’s disease, and brain cancer. The blood–brain barrier (BBB) generally prevents the crossing of drugs into the brain, but nanocarriers can carry the drugs across the BBB to treat brain diseases. This chapter describes the mechanisms that enable nanocarriers to penetrate the BBB and researchers’ strategies to deliver drugs. Further, this chapter describes the development of various nanoparticle-based drug carriers, including inorganic-based polymeric nanomaterials and lipid nanoparticles. It provides insight into the current research in nanocarriers for drug delivery across the BBB. It overviews the limitations of nanocarriers and describes recommendations for their future technological advances and their application to intra-arterial delivery.
