Smart manufacturing solutions, also known as ‘factories of the future’, ‘factories of things’, or simply ‘smart factories’, integrate the latest digital and emerging technologies to achieve greater efficiency and adaptability in manufacturing. The concept is to provide equipment, production processes, and human resource management, with the support of advanced technologies, to address the daily challenges that arise in Industry X.0. In this chapter, we describe the concept of smart factory and the four elements involved: machines and equipment, processes, human resources, and interconnecting technologies. We focus on explaining how the latest advances can impact the manufacturing scenario. We review the advances in connectivity and artificial intelligence. The development of these disciplines can significantly impact factory processes and the machinery and equipment involved. We also discuss the role of human resources in this transformation. The idea is to show readers what a smart factory will look like. We conclude with a reflection on the key insights and prospects of the smart factory for Industry X.0.
