Seed treatment radiotracer uptake study is conducted primarily to determine whether the seed treatment use of an agrochemical is a non-food use or a food use. If it is determined to be a food use, the study helps to reduce the number of seed treatment residue field trials. Seed treatment uses on all crops are considered as non-food uses if radiotracer studies conducted on five representative crops show < 5 ppb of total radioactive residue (TRR) in all raw agricultural commodities (RAC). The five representative crops are a small grain, a root crop, a leafy vegetable, a short season fruiting vegetable and soybean. If the TRR in a RAC sample is ≥ 5 ppb, the number of residue field trials can be reduced by determining the actual quantity of the residues of concern (ROC). The ROC is determined by identifying the components of TRR in the RAC sample. To conduct the radiotracer uptake study, plants are grown from seeds treated with the agrochemical, and TRR in their RAC samples are determined by combustion analysis. If the TRR in a RAC sample exceeds the threshold value, the components of TRR are extracted, identified, and quantified to determine ROC in that sample.
