In this final chapter, we interrogate the scholarly guidebook subgenre more closely, teasing out what this type of guide offered women in professional terms and how they negotiated and situated their careers through the specialized scholarly guidebook subgenre. As noted in Chapter 2 , the majority of women who wrote guidebooks chose to publish scholarly guides; this chapter thus also offers deeper insights into how women constructed a professional identity within the guidebook market as a whole. Through unpublished correspondence written by the Medieval Towns Series authors and their circle of friends and family, we gain an unparalleled understanding of the process by which women built and/or maintained careers in non-fiction writing.

摘要
