Medieval Towns Series: Building Foundations

Through a detailed examination of the creation and use of social networks in the development of the Medieval Towns Series, this chapter argues that social networks, or belonging to certain groups and knowing specific actors (persons or groups), 3 were a critical element in facilitating women’s scholarly Guidebook scholarly guidebook and artistic careers in guidebook publishing. Through the creation and development of such networks, women accessed the education and training, mentorship, and resources needed to succeed in the scholarly Guidebook scholarly guidebook market. By examining social networks, this chapter also argues that female scholarly Guidebook scholarly guidebook producers were members of a transnational cultural elite, a group that flourished in Italy during the fin-de-siècle.
