Women writers were exceptionally active in the production of scholarlyGuidebookscholarly guidebook guides in this period, a trend in women’s publishing which has so far gone unremarked in the historiography to date. This chapter explores the scholarlyGuidebookscholarly guidebook guidebook, arguing that this subgenre offered women interested in pursuing scholarlyGuidebookscholarly guidebook research and receiving public recognition for their work a space to do so in the late-nineteenth century. Of women contributing to the three guidebook subgenres this book identifies, the majority of women writers chose to produce scholarlyGuidebookscholarly guidebook guidebooks. Of the thirty guidebooks written by women in my sample, 73% (twenty-two titles) are categorized as scholarlyGuidebookscholarly guidebook. These numbers suggest that the overwhelming majority of women who chose to write guidebooks claimed some level of expertise in the study of art and history and sought to share this knowledge publicly and for profit.
