Guidebook reading was strongly linked to guidebook production and the process was intrinsically intertextual. While guidebooks were often dismissed as objects for touristsTourist both in historical and contemporary discourse, they were also read by well-educated experts who might consider themselves travellers rather than touristsTourist. The present chapter examines women’s interactions with guidebooks in greater depth while simultaneously underlining women as important actors in shaping the guidebook market. Since the responses of the guidebook’s female audience had important implications for the guidebook market, and for its women writers, this chapter seeks to shed greater light on women readers and their interactions with guides.
