Investigating the late-nineteenth-century guidebook market to Italy, this chapter reveals a greater diversity and range of the guidebook market than has been previously understood. As explained in the introduction, my definition of the guidebook identifies the nineteenth-century guide as a text which contained practicalGuidebookpractical guidebook tourist information and historic/artistic information in a single text and as texts which treated these topics separately while still maintaining didactic and spatial elements. Analysis of 367 guidebooks and an equally substantial body of complementary sources—travel accounts, diaries, journals, and articles in the periodical press—however, demonstrates that the guidebook in the nineteenth century was a more fluid genre than the current understanding of the term would suggest.
