Assessment of the Bioactive Compounds and Metabolites in the Edible Mushroom Used in Management of Rheumatic Disorders

Chronic inflammatory disorder rheumatoid arthritis (RA) causes inflammation in various tissues throughout the body, including joints. Research into the aberrant signalling pathways linked to RA has recently received a lot of funding because of the importance of these pathways in RA diagnosis and treatment. Recent researches also encompass various therapeutic interventions, including approved drugs, clinical therapies, preclinical therapies, and innovative therapeutic technologies. Such advances are expected to improve targeted therapies and provide new insights into potential treatments for RA. Medicinal mushrooms are emerging as potential therapeutic agents with a wide range of beneficial properties. They can serve as antibacterial and antifungal agents, biofilm inhibitors, and cancer fighters, treat diabetes, improve neurofunction, treat cardiovascular disease, serve as antiviral agents and sources of prebiotics, and have immunosuppressive and immunomodulatory effects. Chronic inflammation can have persistent effects but can be mitigated through proper dietary choices. Consumption of functional foods known for their antiinflammatory properties, such as mushrooms, vegetables, legumes, and fish, offers an effective approach to control inflammation. While the immune-boosting properties of mushrooms have received considerable attention, their antiinflammatory potential remains poorly understood. The aim of this chapter is to provide a detailed overview of medicinal edible mushrooms with a focus on their therapeutic effects on the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis. It is expected that these findings will contribute to the further development of targeted therapies and open new avenues for future RA treatment options.
