Toxin Concerns and Safe Consumption of Edible Mushroom

Wild edible mushrooms serve as a crucial means of financial support and nourishment for numerous impoverished communities, as well as being highly valued by recreational foragers. The body of literature concerning the edibility of different mushroom species is continuously growing due to the rising demand for wild mushrooms, a growing interest in foraging, and the exploration of traditional culinary practices. Despite the publication of several case reports on edible mushrooms, uncertainty and ambiguity exist surrounding the identification of safe and appropriate species for consumption. Case reports frequently exhibit variations, and the substantiation for the claimed characteristics of mushrooms may be inadequate or inconclusive. There is a growing need for more precise identification of edible species, as evidenced by the rising instances of mushroom-related poisoning that present significant risks to public health and safety. Annually, there are reported incidents of severe human poisoning primarily resulting from the incorrect identification of poisonous mushroom species. Mushroom intoxication symptoms are attributed to distinctive compounds that are present in a variety of hazardous mushrooms. Metabolic syndrome, bradycardia, rhabdomyolysis, gastroenteritis, intestinal fibrosis, renal failure, erythromelalgia, and convulsions are among the adverse effects associated with mushroom poisoning, according to scientific investigations.
