Edible mushrooms have demonstrated significant nutritional value and are being evaluated as nutraceuticals for their possible health advantages. Mushrooms contain bioactive compounds that can regulate the immune system, reduce inflammation, counteract oxidative stress, lower lipid levels, and inhibit tumor growth, according to studies done in vivo and in vitro. The health benefits of mushrooms can be ascribed to their nutrient profile, which comprises protein, B-vitamins, minerals, and low-fat content. Furthermore, mushrooms contain bioactive chemicals such as polyphenols and flavonoids, which can potentially enhance health outcomes. The issue of weight management is becoming increasingly important for people across all demographics worldwide. Furthermore, new statistics present persuasive data indicating an increase in overweight and obesity rates, not just among adults, but also in children under the age of 12. The increasing prevalence of overweight and obesity is placing significant health, economic, and social burdens on a global scale. Although genetic, biological, and social variables play a significant role, many individuals adopt eating behaviors that increase their susceptibility to weight gain. A clear approach to avoid excessive consumption of energy-dense foods is by replacing them with low-energy-dense alternatives. Mushrooms that can be eaten have a significantly low-calorie content and energy density. Their nutrient composition closely resembles that of numerous foods commonly advised in weight reduction or weight maintenance diets. This chapter examines edible mushroom species, the pathophysiology and etiology of obesity/overweight, the diverse weight management benefits of mushrooms, alterations in adipocyte activities, and future implications.
