Acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) is defined by the Berlin criteria as acute onset arterial hypoxemia within 1 week of clinical insult. Patients with ARDS have a reduced ratio of a partial pressure of oxygen to fraction of inspired oxygen (P/F ratio) of less than 300. In the past two decades, the utility of lung ultrasound in detecting ARDS has evolved and been proven as a reproducible, sensitive, and specific tool to detect morphologic patterns of ARDS, when compared with CT imaging. Application of lung ultrasound to ARDS patients may help Intensivists manage impending respiratory failure and ventilator management.
