Critically ill patients are at high risk for deep venous thrombosis (DVT). Accurate and rapid identification of DVT can be accomplished at the bedside through the use of point-of-care ultrasound. Appropriate evaluation for DVT requires an understanding of venous anatomy, particularly the major venous branchpoints, which are the most common sites of thrombi. Venous compressibility is also a key part of the assessment, as diagnosis of DVT requires either venous noncompressibility or visualization of an echogenic thrombus. While DVT exams can be performed with high accuracy by clinicians from a number of different specialties, knowledge of landmarks, technique, and common causes of diagnostic error are essential. An understanding of doppler assessment and augmentation may be useful in challenging cases.
