In 1692, Johann Bernoulli initiated a correspondence with Varignon, and in 1701, Varignon began corresponding with Leibniz. At this time, Varignon vigorously defended Leibniz’s differential calculus against its opponents at the Paris Académie des sciences. However, even before 1701, indirect exchanges had occurred between Leibniz and Varignon on multiple levels. This study focuses on Leibniz’s perspective and examines the triangular relationship between Leibniz, Varignon, and Johann Bernoulli. It analyses the different levels of communication between Leibniz and Varignon and examines the role Varignon played for Leibniz. This includes his role as an intermediary to the Parisian scientific community and as a partner in mathematical dialogue.

In 1692, Johann Bernoulli initiated a correspondence with Varignon, and in 1701, Varignon began corresponding with Leibniz.
