After a brief survey of Pierre Varignon's correspondence and its fate, this paper will focus more particularly on the epistolary links established by Varignon with the Bernoulli family. Thanks to his position at the Académie royale des sciences, Varignon was able to play a pivotal role as a contact with Paris for the first two generations of the Bernoullis. He welcomed the Bernoullis’s acquaintances from Basel, introduced them to learned circles, shopped for the entire family, worked on their admission to the Académie, obtained pensions for them, translated their memoirs into French, and presented them at academic sessions. It is noteworthy that he initiated scientific debates in the letters he exchanged with Johann I Bernoulli. A few examples of these debates will be presented here. The focus of this study is on the modes of intervention employed by Varignon in various situations, his agency, the types of social and scientific interactions he engaged in, and his position in the national and transnational scientific community. In particular, this analysis will highlight Varignon’s role as an intermediary and conciliator.
