Pierre Varignon is most commonly known as an active member of the Paris Académie des sciences. However, he was also a professor at the collège Mazarin and the Collège royal. This contribution aims to identify sources that may provide insight into his teaching practices through systematic bibliographical research and analyze samples from such sources. After discussing the posters advertising Varignon’s lectures at the Royal College, we point out numerous handwritten lecture notes originating from the collège Mazarin. These have, until now, remained largely unnoticed due to their scattered existence in numerous libraries both within and outside of Paris. We also compare them to various thesis booklets written by Varignon in order to have them defended by his students. Finally, we offer an overall reconstruction of Varignon’s educational program. By meticulously examining two of his treatises, namely, the one on speculative and practical geometry and the one on throwing projectiles and on the movement of pendulums, we demonstrate the significance and diversity of intertextual practices in his educational writings and endeavor to situate them within the intellectual milieu of the period.
