Google Earth Engine Based Forest Monitoring and Decision Support: Evidence from Elrawashdah Forest, Sudan

Sustainable forest management in Sudan is objected by several administrative and technical obstacles such as weakened governance, lack of funds and personnel, and the acute gap in spatio-temporal data coverage. Data unavailability stems from unsystematic inventories, limited baseline studies and minimal reliance on advanced geospatial technologies. Provision of a forest monitoring system will empower a mechanism to collect and analyze data to gain insights on the state of the forest and will enable constant updates and continuous monitoring for informing decisions. With reference to Elrawashdah forest, eastern Sudan, this paper intends to introduce and set an example for google earth engine-based forest monitoring system that will measure various forest integrity indices, multi-temporal forest analysis, and leverage forest up-to-date data availability to raise to the level of the challenges of informing decision making for forest sustainable management. The paper assessed the forest integrity by the NDVI, EVI and RVI indices from 1990 up to 2023. And multitemporal change detection analysis. It was revealed that, the forest had grown during the decade 1990–2000s by 115 sq. km; approximately 28% of the forest total size; as bare lands had naturally regenerated due to rainfall increases after drought strikes in seventies and earlier eighties. However, the forest had then drastically shrunken during the last two decades, i.e. throughout 2000 and 2010 more than 10% of the forested lands had disappeared; nearly 33 sq. km. Then, throughout the period between 2010 and 2020 the forested land had declined more; nearly 42 sq. km of the forest cover had vanished, approximately 14% of the forest total size, consequently, bare and agricultural lands prevailed instead. In conclusion, the study showed that the forest ecosystem had been destructed and hurriedly overwhelmed by agricultural lands that are expanding rapidly and the average annual loss of the forest has exceeded 1% which is an alarming rate. The study recommends that, the agricultural expansion into the forest must immediately be stopped and tree logging to be controlled and governed by rotational forest cultivation.
