The harmonious movements of the shoulder, elbow, forearm, wrist, and hand are of great importance in all aspects of daily life. Bone and soft tissue defects of the upper extremities can result from work-related accidents, firearm injuries, tumors, and traffic accidents. Treatment of these defects requires detailed preoperative planning. Treatment should take into account the patient’s overall clinical condition, the severity of the injury, and reconstruction options. Bone biology and fixation principles must also be considered. Treatment of bone defects in the upper extremities, although less common than in the lower extremities, is more challenging, because the functionality of the limb should be preserved as much as possible (Hu et al., Management of complex forearm defects: a multidisciplinary approach, 2020). The main goals in upper extremity reconstruction are to preserve limb length and symmetry, prevent deformity and pain, and achieve the best possible functional and cosmetic outcome (Cano-Luís et al., Injury 49:S27–S35, 2018; Landau et al., J Surg Oncol 117(7):1432–9, 2018).
