The first human small bowel transplant was performed in humans in 1964 at the Boston Floating Hospital for Children and the first multivisceral transplantation (MVT) was performed by Starlz in 1984. He reported MVT in two children who had short bowel syndrome and liver failure induced by total parenteral nutrition (TPN). The first patient died during the immediate postoperative period, and the second patient survived under cyclosporine-based immunosuppression, and died after 6 months, due to progressive post-transplant lymphoproliferative disease (PTLD) [1, 2].
