The first human orthotopic liver transplant was carried out by Starzl in the 1960s. At the beginning, survival rates were disappointing (less than 50%) and only few patients received a graft. Only two decades after, the number of procedures increased and achieved an acceptable survival rate. The improvement is related with better surgical techniques, better perioperative care, and the development of better immunosuppressive agents [1].
