Adequate nutritional intervention is proven to modify postoperative evolution favorably. The prevalence of malnutrition (any nutritional imbalance caused by deficient or inadequate intake of calories and proteins) in surgical patients can range from 40% to 70%, especially in patients with diseases related to the gastrointestinal tract. And according to the American Society for Enhanced Recovery, two of three patients undergoing abdominal surgery were malnourished, with a three times higher risk of complications and five times more mortality. Also, at the same time, just one of five patients receives evaluation and treatment before the surgery.
