Applied Sport and Exercise Psychology Maximizing Athletic Performance, Rehabilitation, Motivation, and Well-Being

This chapter provides a summary of Sport and Exercise Psychology (SEP) as a profession and field of study with a particular emphasis on enhancing athletic performance, injury rehabilitation, motivation, and mental toughness. It will highlight the advancements of SEP in the past 5–10 years, providing insights towards the improvement of skills like goal setting practices and also explore empirical evidence that supports the efficacy of exercise as a viable intervention for the treatment of chronic and acute illnesses. Fundamental psychological methods such as visualization, self-talk, and the intricacies of intrinsic and extrinsic motivation will also be explored in this chapter. The chapter also examines the evolving purpose of sport and exercise psychologists in professional and amateur sports organizations, fitness industries, and rehabilitative settings. Lastly, to provide a comprehensive understanding of this area of study and emerging profession, this chapter will also explore cultural competence, ethical considerations, and pathways to becoming a licensed practitioner.
