This chapter provides an introduction to the field of health psychology, which is both an applied field and a burgeoning research field. This chapter explores some of the foundational principles of health psychology and explores the role that this field plays in understanding how biological, psychological, and social factors collectively influence health and well-being. As this is a rapidly evolving field, in this chapter, we explore the scientific progress being made in this field and ways in which research is being utilized to address health habits of an aging population. We also explore the myriad methods and theories utilized by clinical practitioners to modification of health behaviors, which is a critical societal issue. We also delve into future directions and trends for the field of health psychology and careers one might pursue in this field.
