Advancements in Clinical Psychology: Exploring the Intersection of Science, Intervention, and Ethics

This chapter examines the role of clinical psychologists and counsellors in the assessment, diagnosis, and treatment of mental health disorders. The rise in mental health in the USA, Canada, and Japan, particularly following the COVID-19 pandemic, highlights the need for a societal shift to reduce stigma and create pathways towards care. Key moments in clinical psychology history are explored, along with current and emerging trends in mental health. Through a social justice lens, this work also speaks to the need for practitioners cultural competency, equality in access to care, and the influence of colonized practices. At the same time, outlining the academic path to becoming a clinical practitioner.
