The Evolutionary Trajectory of Applied Psychology: Historical Perspectives, Theoretical Advancements, and Contemporary Challenges

This chapter explores the evolution of applied psychology through the complexities of the human experience when considering social, cultural, and political influences. Drawing from ancient philosophy to the formalization of the profession by the likes of Wundt and Freud, psychology has led the study of human behavior and has adapted to the ever-changing needs of society. Applied psychology integrates theory and research into practice to solve real-world issues, spanning from the laboratory, community, and the workplace, with the intent to improve the human condition. However, the field’s historical ties are deep-rooted in colonialism and Eurocentric models, which have caused harm, particularly to marginalized groups. The recent move towards decolonization and embracing social justice movements like #MeTOO and Black Lives Matter have shifted the conversation towards a more diverse and equitable approach to understanding and practice. As psychology continues to evolve in a globalized, rapidly changing world, the balance remains with a need for scientific rigour and the added responsibility to challenge and dismantle oppressive structures and address larger socio-political contexts.
