Biomaterials for Tissue Engineered Cartilage Product for Orthopedic (Osteoarthritis) Reconstruction

The present improved treatment in orthopedics may be attributed mostly to the advancements in biomaterial science, surpassing any other clinical medical specialty. This concise review aims to provide an overview of the current state of biomaterials in the area of orthopedics. It also offers insights into the potential future applications of biomaterials in the treatment of musculoskeletal ailments, with a specific focus on immune regulation. Initially, orthopedic biological materials were developed as passive substitutes for hard tissues like bone and cartilage. However, regenerative medicine is expected to have a more significant impact in both avoiding the loss of tissues due to trauma and addressing the early stages of illnesses. Enhancing our comprehension and control of the immune system’s reaction to biomaterials would facilitate the more effective integration of implants into the host tissue or the almost flawless regeneration of the host tissue.
