Microbial infection is a significant contributing factor that can result in implant failure, periodontitis, and tooth decay. A potential remedy is offered by antimicrobial biomaterials, which offer infection control in addition to structural support. The growing clinical demands of dental patients have led to the development of a variety of dental biomaterials. For application in the oral environment, newly created dental biomaterials need to be both biocompatible and physically durable. At the moment, zirconia, titanium alloys, resin composites, and other materials are the most often utilized dental materials. Also, materials for tissue engineering that aim to regenerate oral tissues both soft and hard are gaining popularity. The design, modes of action, efficacy and clinical uses of antimicrobial biomaterials for dental applications are reviewed in this study along with the most recent advancements in this field. It cover a variety of antimicrobial agents, including as natural extracts mixed with dental materials, bioactive glass, metal nanoparticles and polymers.
