Bioinspired Green Biomaterials for Advanced Therapeutics, Diagnostics and Biosensors

Biomaterials are a type of materials that present interaction with biological systems for biomedical applications. The use of biomaterials in devices for tissue engineering, biosensors, drug delivery, and implants has grown significantly over the past decades due to advances in the field. However, the production of biomaterials can be achieved by several methods that raise concerns about environmental burdens. The continuous and increasing awareness related to the environment and sustainability on the planet Earth has boosted the search for innovations to produce biomaterials that align performance and reduction of pollution. In this scope, green methods use less toxic and harmful chemicals in manufacturing, in addition to reducing the waste generation and pollution of water bodies and the atmosphere. One promising strategy is the reuse of agro-industrial wastes to produce green biomaterials. These bioinspired green biomaterials have the potential to be applied in smart and advanced devices for therapeutics, diagnostics, and biosensors. However, besides the benefits for the environment, there are drawbacks related to high costs, control of size and morphology as well as the lack of information about green biomaterials for medical purposes. In this context, this chapter aims to showcase the current status of the use of green biomaterials for advanced biomedical applications, accentuating the innovations in the area.
