Digital Orthodontic Appliance Design

Orthodontic appliance design has been completely modernised with the introduction of computer-aided design (CAD) programmes. These software packages undoubtedly facilitate the appliance design to unprecedented levels, whilst the 3D printing capabilities facilitate printing beyond what was thought possible. Artificial intelligence (AI) and its continuous upgrades is also allowing the transition from semi-automation to full automation, a tangible reality. The increased array of materials available is also partnering with the enhanced technology to render the digitisation process tailorable to every use. This chapter aims to describe the applications of these contemporary packages in designing orthodontic appliances. For simplification purposes, focus will be placed on one of the specialised packages available.
