The neoconservative chapter delivers the theoretical binding agent which makes these conflicts appropriate for cross-analysis. In order to deconstruct the discursive processes by which the justification or condemnation of military interventions is constructed and sustained this book first proceeds by situating the relevance of the chosen conflicts both to one another. Through an analysis of Leo Strauss’ influence on contemporary neoconservative thinkers, the manner in which this political philosophy translates into a foreign policy is sketched. This section largely highlights that the neoconservative influence helps to render the case study selection logical, as there was significant influence from these thinkers for both conflicts, a rarity with U.S. foreign policy history. Further to this, the neoconservative section contextualizes the dominant discourses analyzed and aids in the inductive analysis undertaken throughout.
