Following the 9th Tehran Biennial in 2004, Iranian photography entered a pivotal moment in its evolution, which is examined in this chapter. The political and social movements of the mid-1990s sparked a paradigm shift that prompted inquisitive minds to reassess the political discourse, social conditions, and cultural perceptions, which, in turn, gradually reshaped the landscape of Iranian art and photography. Photography progressively immersed itself in politics and social reformism, undergoing a transformative shift from a medium defined by formalism, metaphorical interpretations, and detachment to one that emerged as a critical and probing force. It took on the role of a self-aware observer, not only to expose its own latent mechanisms but also to dismantle the veneer of socio-political structures and cultural norms.

摘要
