Many documentaries have blunders that are far less forgivable. If the orbit of a satellite starts to decay, it can be boosted into a higher orbit by propelling it to a higher velocity. A UK documentary showed the jets propelling the satellite straight up. Is this really the correct answer? Some literary critics hail Jules Verne as a scientific genius. But his books are full of mathematical and engineering howlers. Jules Verne has the excuse of having written his books long ago, but the same cannot be said for the perpetrators of the film ‘Gravity’ that breaks almost every kinetic law in the book. When it comes to the mythology that surrounds ‘black holes’ all common sense is lost. Every newsreader seems to report that black holes are sucking everything in like a giant vacuum cleaner, while other writers see them as the ends of wormholes.
