This chapter argues for the rightful place of knowledge management among the “Grand Theories” and aims to clarify the conundrum around its substance. A short introduction presents the ‘knowledge imperative’ underscoring the centrality of knowledge for delivering competitive advantage. Then, we go back to the KM inception and investigate its origins. This leads us to discuss the role of Knightian uncertainties and knowledge absences as the foundations of knowledge management. This chapter also touches on KM and Society 5.0.
