The first chapter explains the rationale of the book as a whole. Drawing in part on my own experience I claim that the greyhound, one of the most ancient types of dog, has played a significant part—sometimes as hero, sometimes as victim—in many cultural developments over many centuries. The ‘co-evolutionary’ theory set out by Edmund Russell in his Greyhound Nation (2018) is drawn upon to support this proposition along with the inter-species ideas of the philosopher Mary Midgley. Early theatrical evidence of the greyhound’s charisma is provided by Ben Jonson’s Every Man Out of His humour (1599) and by later texts, along with the visual testimony of pictures by Anthony Van Dyke, William Hogarth, Edouard Manet and Berthe Morisot.
